About Jim Leutze

Education/Work Experience: 
Dr. Jim Leutze holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree from the University of Miami and a doctoral degree from Duke University. A veteran, Jim served in the U.S. Air Force, rising from 2nd Lt. to the rank of Captain.

As a professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he was repeatedly recognized for excellence in teaching. Named chair of the Curriculum for Peace, War and Defense and, in recognition of his teaching and research, was appointed the first Dowd Professor of War and Peace.
He began his career as an administrator in 1987, when he became president of Hampton-Sydney College in Virginia. In 1990, Jim adopted Wilmington as his new hometown where he’s resided for 20 years. He was selected as Chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington, a position he held until 2003.

Community Organizations: 

Currently, He is the interim executive director of the Upper Coastal Plains Learning Council, co-chair of the Off Shore Energy Exploration Legislative Research Commission and co-chair of the Hunt Scholars’ Council at NC State University.

He serves on the boards of the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission, the Nature Conservancy, the Daniel D. and Elizabeth H. Cameron Foundation and the North Carolina Beaches, Inlets and Waterways Association. He is also a regular contributor to Metro Magazine.
