A year-old law allowing the state to pay funeral expenses for Highway Patrol troopers killed in the line of duty has expired.
But legislators could revive it to help future grieving families. The Senate agreed Thursday to eliminate the law's sunset, and the House could take up the matter next week before they adjourn for the year.
The law came about after the shooting death of Trooper David Shawn Blanton on Interstate 40 near Canton.
Sen. John Snow, the bill sponsor, wants the state to cover funeral expenses for all law enforcement killed on the job, but that won't happen this year.
