Raleigh—Senator Joe Sam Queen recently received acclaim for his efforts on behalf of the military and veterans. Senator Queen was awarded the Charles Dick Medal of Merit from the North Carolina National Guard.
The Charles Dick Medal of Merit for 2009 was given to Senator Queen by Maj. Gen. William E. Ingram Jr., Adjutant General of the North Carolina National Guard “for exceptionally meritorious service to the North Carolina National Guard while serving as a North Carolina State Senator. His dedication, leadership and tireless efforts have provided exemplary support to soldiers, airmen and families of the North Carolina National Guard. Your distinguished service reflects great credit upon yourself, the North Carolina National Guard, the State of North Carolina, and the United States of America,” according to the presentation.
The medal is named in honor of Major General Charles Dick, president of the National Guard Association of the United States from 1902 to 1909, a major general in the Ohio National Guard, a Congressman and later a Senator. Dick was responsible for the passage of the Dick Acts of 1903 and 1908 that established the foundation of the modern National Guard.
Senator Queen said, “I am honored and humbled by the receiving the Charles Dick Medal. Those who serve as citizen soldiers and their families make an exceptionally meaningful sacrifice to protect the freedoms we all hold dear. I pledge to continue working to keep North Carolina the most military-friendly state in America.”
