Tapping the power of the sun
Progress Energy customers can now claim a fraction of their power comes from the sun.
A new solar farm is on line in Canton sporting 2,340 solar panels on four acres — generating enough electricity to power 51 homes. A new state law that mandates utilities get 12.5 percent of their power from renewable sources by the year 2021 was the catalyst for the solar farm.

Margaret Dickson was sworn in as a North Carolina state senator Wednesday. She was elected by an executive committee to fill the District 19 seat, which represents Cumberland and Bladen counties, vacated by Tony Rand following his resignation.
Swindell openness wins watchdog groups' praise
Swindell, a Nash County Democrat, was recognized by Democracy North Carolina and the NC Free Enterprise Foundation. He is one of 32 state legislators to receive the “Sunshine Award” from Democracy North Carolina, a statewide, nonpartisan organization dedicated to increasing government and campaign transparency and voter participation.
State program helps 2,500 homeowners
A program established last year has enabled more than 2,500 North Carolina homeowners to avoid foreclosure, the N.C. Office of the Commissioner of Banks announced this morning.
