About Barbara Garrity-Blake
Family:
- Barbara's husband Bryan Blake is a boat builder. He is long-time chief of the Marshallberg Volunteer Fire Department.
- Bryan and Barbara have three children and three grandchildren. Their youngest son attends UNC-Greensboro.
Education/Work Experience:
- Barbara holds a Ph.D in anthropology from the University of Virginia. She has taught at East Carolina University and Carteret Community College. Today she is a researcher and teacher.
- Barbara is a writer and musician. She co-founded the Gloucester Mardi Gras, an annual community festival.
Community Involvment:
- Barbara launched an effort to try mediation as a better way to manage certain fisheries conflicts, and studied mediation in real-world fisheries contexts.
- Barbara served as chair of the Coastal Habitat Protection Plan (CHPP) steering committee, which developed recommendations to better protect coastal fisheries habitats.
- Barbara led the project "Raising the Story of Menhaden Fishing", documenting and honoring the people who long worked in North Carolina's fishmeal and oil industry.
Issues & Priorities
- Economy: Barbara believes that a diverse economy is a healthy economy. She values modern and emerging industries as well as traditional businesses. She will fight hard to bring new, quality jobs into our area.
- Education: Barbara values quality schools with low class sizes. She supports obtaining the necessary resources to expand our science and math programs so that students can compete and prosper in today’s high-tech world.
- Healthcare: Barbara maintains that all citizens deserve access to quality healthcare no matter what their income level. She is concerned that people struggling with mental health issues face declining and fragmented services.
- Environment: Barbara cares about the environment. She believes that we have a responsibility to protect the health and natural beauty of our public trust resources for future generations to enjoy.
