ECONOMY
Senate Democrats believe that ALL North Carolinians deserve economic opportunity. That’s why we continue to fight for lower taxes for working families, support for small businesses, and raising the minimum wage. We believe in investing in basic services like Medicaid and SNAP to support North Carolina’s workforce and reduce the financial burden on those who keep our state running.
PUBLIC SAFETY
Making our communities safer is a top priority for Senate Democrats. We need to increase funding for local law enforcement and implement retention benefits to address vacancies, support mental health and crisis intervention programs, and invest in solutions to the opioid and substance abuse crisis. At the same time, we must address the epidemic of gun violence in the United States with commonsense gun reforms like expanding background check requirements.
HEALTHCARE
In 2023, Senate Democrats finally lifted the Republican blockade on Medicaid expansion, offering over half a million North Carolinians access to healthcare while bringing jobs and federal funds to our state. This allowed our citizens to get care for chronic conditions, prevent illness and disease progression and live healthy, productive lives. Now, after the passage of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” over 650,000 North Carolinians who participated in Medicaid expansion will lose access over the next decade. Senate Democrats are continuing the fight to protect Medicaid access on the state level to protect North Carolinians on both Medicaid and private insurance.
EDUCATION
Senate Democrats fight for investments in public education to improve educational outcomes and provide enriching academic opportunities for all North Carolina students. These investments include raising per-pupil spending and paying our teachers a professional wage to set our students up for success. We must restore NC’s once-envied early childhood education systems, competitive K-12 schools, and world-class public university system. Since Republicans have taken charge of the state legislature, they have stripped funding of our public schools in favor of their taxpayer-funded private school voucher scheme, leaving our public schools and children behind.
VOTING RIGHTS
Senate Democrats will fight to undo unconstitutional Republican gerrymandering to make sure that all North Carolinians are heard at the ballot box. Legislators should never be able to hand-select their voters to ensure their victory. The North Carolina State Board of Elections must also be fully funded and nonpartisan so all eligible voters can cast their vote with ease and feel confident in the security and fairness of our elections.
REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM
Like the vast majority of North Carolinians, Senate Democrats are steadfast in our support for a woman’s right to choose. We trust North Carolinians and our doctors to make that decision – not the government, and we continue to stand against Republican assaults on women’s fundamental freedoms. In a post-Dobbs era, we must hold the line and ensure that reproductive rights remain intact in North Carolina. We must also protect healthcare for pregnant women and invest in solutions for North Carolina’s high maternal mortality rate.
